The first verse of this song "A drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm" refers to Admiral Lord Nelson, whose body, after the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, was placed in a barrel of rum to keep it pickled for the trip home. Legend says that some of the sailors on board that voyage tapped the barrel and drank the rum in which the Admiral was preserved, forevermore designating rum to sailors as "Nelson's Blood".
