This halyard shanty came across the Atlantic derived from an African work song called "Knock a Man Down". The "blow" referred to in the song is the striking of a man, not the verb you were thinking of.
Recorded during the "Broadside Buddies" sessions in the spring of 2006, this song never turned out like we wanted (in fact, it was terrible) and thus never made it on the recording.
